Sunny days ahead for Mountain Mandarin Festival

The drippy weather we've been experiencing should be just a memory as the Mountain Mandarin Festival returns this weekend with its sunny fruit to the Grounds in Roseville.

The festival runs Friday to Sunday, Nov. 21-23, with entertainment, 200 vendors, a Kids Zone and every type of mandarin-inspired food. And, of course, there will be plenty of the citrus fruit at the heart of the event, sold by 15 local growers.

Last year's opening day was caught in an atmospheric river that dampened the site and everyone attending. But this year, sunshine is forecast all weekend, with highs in Roseville about 60 degrees, just a little below the average for the month. (You might want to take a jacket.)

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $14 general, $10 seniors, $8 juniors (age 11-17) and free for kids 10 and under. Friday has a special price of $8. Season passes good for all three days are $29 general, $22 seniors and $17 juniors. Parking purchased in advance is $12; $15 day-of. Online purchases will include fees. The Mandarin Festival Main Stage will be busy each day, with music and events such as the Best Mandarin Contest (noon Friday), and the Miss Mandarin Pageant (9:30 a.m. Saturday).

The Community Stage will feature Jordan the Science Wizard, and the Orchard Stage will have Steve's Fun Balloons and other entertainment for the kids. The Cooking Stage fires up at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Sunday, with recipes such as Mandarin Shrimp Tostadas and Mandarin Chicken Pasta Salad.

A highlight of the festival is the Recipe Contest, held on Sunday, Nov. 23. Entry forms must be submitted by Saturday at noon. All dishes must be delivered to the Cooking Stage in the Garden Room at the Grounds between 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Sunday. Participants may submit one entry for each category. Garden checklist for week of June 21

The weather is pleasant. Get out early and get stuff done!

* Water early in the morning; it cuts down on evaporation and moisture loss. When surveying your garden, remember: Afternoon wilt maybe normal, but plants that look wilted in the morning need immediate attention.

* Warm weather brings rapid growth in the vegetable garden, with tomatoes and squash enjoying the heat. Deep-water, then feed with a balanced fertilizer. Bone meal can spur the bloom cycle and help set fruit.

* Generally, tomatoes need deep watering two to three times a week, but don’t let them dry out completely. That can encourage blossom-end rot.

* It’s not too late to squeeze in a few more tomato and pepper transplants.

* From seed, plant corn, pumpkins, melons, radishes, squash and sunflowers.

* Plant basil to go with your tomatoes. 

* Transplant summer annuals such as petunias, marigolds and zinnias.

* It’s also a good time to transplant perennial flowers including astilbe, columbine, coneflowers, coreopsis, dahlias, rudbeckia, salvia and verbena.

* Let the grass grow longer. Set the mower blades high to reduce stress on your lawn during summer heat. To cut down on evaporation, water your lawn deeply during the wee hours of the morning, between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.

* Tie up vines and stake tall plants such as gladiolus and lilies. That gives their heavy flowers some support.

* Dig and divide crowded bulbs after the tops have died down.

* Feed summer flowers with a slow-release fertilizer.

* Mulch, mulch, mulch! This “blanket” keeps moisture in the soil longer and helps your plants cope during hot weather.

* Avoid pot “hot feet.” Place a 1-inch-thick board under container plants sitting on pavement. This little cushion helps insulate them from radiated heat.

* Thin grapes on the vine for bigger, better clusters later this summer.

* Cut back fruit-bearing canes on berries.

* Feed camellias, azaleas and other acid-loving plants. Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce heat stress.

* Cut back Shasta daisies after flowering to encourage a second bloom in the fall.

* Trim off dead flowers from rose bushes to keep them blooming through the summer. Roses also benefit from deep watering and feeding now. A top dressing of aged compost will keep them happy. It feeds as well as keeps roots moist.

* Pinch back chrysanthemums for bushier plants with many more flowers in September.
