The Sierra Nevada resort town of South Lake Tahoe attracts both adrenaline seekers and nature lovers year-round with outdoor pursuits and pristine beauty. Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, golfing, boating—every day looks like a Lands’ End photo shoot. Indoors, the five-member city council—three councilmembers, a mayor, and a mayor pro tem – take care of civic business affecting the roughly 22,00 citizens.
Five councilmembers, elected at large for four-year staggered terms, govern the city. The city clerk and treasurer are also elected by voters. Races for these positions are held in November of even-numbered years.
The Planning Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Meetings are live-broadcast online and on Charter Cable SLT Channel 21. Past meetings are archived on the city website.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council unanimously voted in favor of preparing an informational report on the impacts of the vacancy tax measure hitting ballots in November.
The City is seeking input from the community on updating the Lake Tahoe Airport 20-Year Master Plan.
City Council passed a motion on May 7, providing a predevelopment loan to a developer for an affordable housing project, plans of which rely on changes to area developmental standards currently caught up in litigation.
City Council unanimously passed the first reading of an ordinance designating Very High Fire Severity Zones within city limits provided by CalFire. South Tahoe Fire Chief Jim Drennan explained, "This really is just a revision of the map for an ordinance that's already in place."
The city of South Lake Tahoe's Mid-Town Area Plan process is now underway.
