One of Santa Clara County’s oldest communities, Los Gatos can trace its roots to 1840, when the Mexican government granted a 6,600-acre rancho to Sebastian Peralta and Jose Hernandez. The rancho’s original name, La Rinconada de Los Gatos, was inspired by the screams of mountain lions prowling in the night. Incorporated in 1887, the town’s economy was driven by logging and agriculture, though now it is better known as a Silicon Valley suburb (and the headquarters of streaming giant Netflix). Situated at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Los Gatos retains its small-town charm with Victorian-era homes and commercial buildings.

Roughly 35% of Los Gatos residents rent, with an average payment of $3,252, according to data from the town and Zillow. That’s 13% higher than San Jose and 55% higher than the national average.
A quiet neighborhood just off bustling Los Gatos Boulevard could be forever changed if a massive housing project comes to fruition.
Los Gatos’ famous poles with orange netting and flags are a thing of the past on some development projects in town.
