The county seat of Nevada County has a population of around 3,100 and is located on the forested western slope of the Sierra Nevada. This Gold Rush town is so well-preserved that the Nevada City Downtown Historic District is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. That history is celebrated in museums dedicated to mining and railroads, but modern culture gets its due with the Nevada City Film Festival, the Wild and Scenic River Festival, the Miners Foundry Cultural Center, and public radio station KMVR.
