Hugging the spectacularly rugged Monterey Bay, the city of Monterey occupies a land area of 8.466 square mile and has a population of 28,352 (as of 2019). Cannery Row, once the heart of the sardine-packing industry made famous by John Steinbeck, is now populated by fancy waterfront hotels, cafes and snackeries, and streetwear shops (yet, sadly, no sardine-on-a-stick stands). The famous Monterey Bay Aquarium draws visitors with thousands of marine animals and plants in underwater and interactive exhibits.
The Monterey City Council meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 4 and 7 p.m. Meetings are broadcast live on the Monterey Channel and streamed on the web.
