The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is calling for nominations for projects completed in 2022 or 2023 that display outstanding environmental design to be recognized in the 31st annual Best in Basin awards program.

Signs of springtime are in the air even though snow is still on the ground and spring cleaning inside and outside is typical for Tahoe. That means getting homes ready for the summer by creating or cleaning up defensible space around the home.

As the winter snow melts away and the flowers begin to bloom, springtime brings about a sense of renewal and rejuvenation. It also marks the beginning of a new season for fire prevention efforts.

As spring returns to Lake Tahoe, a story of resilience and resurgence is also unfolding. It's the migration of the Sandhill Cranes – magnificent birds that once upon a time had all but vanished from the Tahoe region.

Beavers create unburned islands where plants and animals can shelter from megafires, research has confirmed. A movement is afoot to reintroduce the rodents to the state's waterways.

Sierra Community House has launched a Community Pantry format in Truckee, which allows individuals to select their own food items, which in turn empowers the community and reduces waste.  The new client choice distribution model incorporates dignity, empowerment and connection into hunger relief services, according to a press release.
Food distribution in Kings Beach already operates with client choice principles, while Incline Village still functions as a traditional model due to the logistical challenges that come with a pop-up pickup and home delivery distribution, according to the release. Most of South Lake Tahoe’s water and sewer systems were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Additional investments are needed to avoid costly emergency projects.
